Co-enzyme Q10 is an antioxidant involved in energy production. It may be beneficial for those with low energy, and can also support cardiovascular function.

Co-enzyme Q10 levels decrease with age, and are depleted by intense physical exercise or illness. Coenzyme Q10 levels are also depleted in patients prescribed cholesterol-lowering statin drugs.

Until recently, coenzyme Q10 supplements were only available in the oxidised form, as ubiquinone. Most people are able to absorb supplemental Q10 in this form adequately. However, certain categories of people may be less able to absorb this form of Q10, such as the elderly, as well as people with pancreatic and liver disease, digestive disorders such as IBS, and following digestive tract surgery. For such categories of people, Q10 is more easily absorbed in the reduced form (ubiquinol), as BioActive Q10 Uniquinol.

Co-enzyme Q10 (also known as ubiquinone) is a vitamin like substance which plays a vital role in the body's energy supply mechanism, acting in conjunction with enzymes (hence the name coenzyme Q10) to convert sugars and fat into energy. Co-enzyme Q10 is also important as an antioxidant within the body. Co-enzyme quinones occur in several chemical forms, with co-enzyme Q10 being the only form found in human tissues. The human body is able to synthesize (in the liver) a limited amount of co-enzyme Q10, with the remainder being obtained from the diet. Rich sources of co-enzyme Q10 include fish (mackerel, salmon, sardines) and nuts. Under normal circumstances, the body is able to maintain adequate levels of coenzyme Q10.
